Funds raised to help more than 100 children in local community
– December 7, 2011 – Today, Weston Bakeries donated more than
$24,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Annapolis Valley in Kentville, Nova Scotia. All funds raised by employees of Sarsfield Foods Limited were matched by George Weston Limited as part of the company-wide Wonder+Cares campaign.
During October, each Weston plant and office in Canada selected a children's charitable organization in its community that focuses on active lifestyles and well-being. Employees raised funds for their local cause, and George Weston Limited matched all donations dollar for dollar. Across Canada, Weston employees raised more than $250,000 in 2011, which George Weston Limited matched, resulting in total donations of more than $500,000. Since the program's inception two years ago, Wonder+Cares has raised more than $885,000.
“Weston Bakeries is proud to support local children's charities across Canada,” says Galen Weston, chairman, George Weston Limited. “We believe the more we invest in our kids’ futures today, the better our communities will be tomorrow.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Annapolis Valley to receive $24,000
Since 1975, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Annapolis Valley has been pairing youth with positive mentors as part of its commitment to providing equal opportunities to all youth in the community. The two programs that will benefit from the donation –Go Girls! and Game On! – encourage children to be active, eat well, be positive and develop healthy self-esteem.
“We cannot thank the staff of Sarsfield Foods Limited enough for this generous donation,” says Robin Benedict, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Annapolis Valley. “Many of the children we work with live in rural areas, so these funds will enable us to reach more children with our Go Girls! And Game On! programs.”
